Cool Features on the New iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

They’re bigger and more beautiful! Okay, they’re more beautiful. In fact, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are exactly the same sizes as their 6s and 6s Plus counterparts, respectively. However, the latest addition to the iPhone pantheon has some interesting new features that may just compel you to spring for an upgrade. Here’s what you need to know.

Battery Life

According to Apple, users of the 7 series will enjoy up to two additional hours of battery life for the iPhone 7 (as opposed to 6s) and up to 1 hour longer for the 7 Plus (up from the 6s Plus). It will, of course, depend on your usage and how many apps you forgot you left running in the background.

Display

The latest iPhones tout brighter, more colorful displays. As expected, the Plus model has a larger screen size, with the iPhone 7 offering 4.7 LED-backlit inches of retina HD display while the Plus provides 5.5 inches. Resolution is fantastic, as well.

The 7 has 1334-by-750-pixel resolution at 326 ppi while the 7 Plus provides 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution at 401 ppi. Will streaming video look fantastic? The answer is yes. Also nice is the fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating that keeps smudges from ruining your viewing experience.

Camera

A lot is being made of the upgraded cameras in the 7 series. Both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus feature 12 megapixel cameras with optical image stabilization (allowing for longer exposures).

The iPhone 7 Plus, however, has a new and improved feature that users are already freaking out about: the dual lenses (both 12 mp) that offer 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom. Portrait mode is also neat, providing a shallow field of depth that blurs the background behind subjects. Users will also enjoy wide-angle and telephoto options.

Speakers

Speakers aren’t necessarily a deal-breaker when it comes to smartphones, what with so many options on the market for affordable Bluetooth speakers. The addition of stereo speakers will certainly be nice when you’re listening to music or watching videos on your phone, though.

Water Resistant

Anyone who has ever dropped their phone in a toilet or the ocean (yes and yes, I’m ashamed to admit) will be happy to hear that the 7 series is water and splash resistant. Okay, it won’t withstand immersion most likely, but if you splash a little gin and tonic on your device (yup, done that, too), you won’t necessarily have to go running for a bag of rice. Both models are also dust resistant thanks to the re-engineered enclosure.
